Who is Rise Against?

Rise Against, formed in 1999 in Chicago, is a punk rock band known for blending hardcore punk with melodic elements. The current lineup features Tim McIlrath on vocals and rhythm guitar, Zach Blair on lead guitar, Joe Principe on bass, and Brandon Barnes on drums. Their music combines fast tempos, aggressive energy, and catchy hooks, while their lyrics often focus on social and political issues, including environmentalism, animal rights, and humanitarianism.

The band began their career under the independent label Fat Wreck Chords, releasing The Unraveling (2001) and Revolutions per Minute (2003), which found success within the underground punk scene. In 2003, they transitioned to the major label Dreamworks, later absorbed by Geffen Records. Their 2004 release, Siren Song of the Counter Culture, brought them into the mainstream, thanks to hits like “Give It All” and “Swing Life Away.”

Their 2006 album, The Sufferer & the Witness, reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 and expanded their reach internationally. With Appeal to Reason (2008), the band adopted a more radio-friendly approach, and the single “Savior” set a record for consecutive weeks on the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs charts. Endgame (2011) further cemented their popularity, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and achieving global chart success. Their later albums, The Black Market (2014) and Wolves (2017), both debuted in the top ten on the Billboard 200, continuing their commercial success. Their most recent album, Nowhere Generation, was released in 2021.

Beyond music, Rise Against is active in promoting progressive causes, supporting organizations like Amnesty International and the It Gets Better Project. Many members are straight edge, vegetarian, and aligned with PETA’s mission of animal rights advocacy.
